…Says it is ‘credible alternative for Nigeria’
In a bold move to address Nigeria’s pressing socio-political challenges, a coalition of prominent northern elites has proposed the formation of the League of National Democrats, (LND).

The initiative, championed by Dr. Umar Ardo, Convener of the LND, aims to break the cycle of poor governance that has characterised the nation’s political landscape under the ruling APC and opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP).
The call for a new political movement follows a scathing critique of Nigeria’s current governance structures. recall that in a recent New Year message, a former National vice-chairman, (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Dr. Salihu Lukman, underscored the failures of entrenched political systems, citing endemic poverty, insecurity, corruption, and institutional decay as consequences of ineffective leadership.
The proposed LND seeks to offer a fresh start, grounded in democratic values, meritocracy, and transparency. It envisions itself as a grassroots political force, committed to addressing Nigeria’s core issues through innovative and inclusive approaches. With its origins in Northern Nigeria, the LND plans to expand southward, fostering national unity and inclusivity. Once fully established, it will register as a political party, providing a credible alternative to the APC and PDP.
Key principles of the LND include: Patriotism and Honesty – Prioritizing service to the nation over self-interest; Internal Democracy – Ensuring leadership selection is based on merit, not imposition.
Others are: Competence Over Loyalty: Rewarding excellence in public service to reduce corruption and inefficiencies; Visionary Leadership: Addressing socio-economic challenges with innovative, evidence-based policies.
The LND said its formation is a response to decades of governance characterised by mediocrity and corruption. According to Dr. Ardo, both the APC and PDP have failed to inspire trust or deliver meaningful progress, with leadership often driven by personal ambition rather than the public good.
“The LND will prioritise institutional renewal as the foundation for national transformation. By building frameworks that reward competence and integrity, we can restore faith in governance and set Nigeria on a path to prosperity”, he emphasised.
The LND invited Nigerians from all regions to join the movement, urging citizens to: Support the LND: Advocate for its registration as a political party; Re-orient Political Culture: Emphasize meritocracy and service over patronage; Build Alliances: Partner with like-minded individuals and groups to create a pan-Nigerian coalition; Demand Accountability: Hold leaders to the highest standards of transparency and competence.
The LND’s ambitious vision, it noted, includes: Using tools like the “Order of Mean Score: A Framework for Rating Leadership Candidates” to ensure leadership selection is evidence-based and objective.
As Nigeria stands at a crossroads, the LND offers a beacon of hope for citizens disillusioned by the status quo. It promises to unite the nation, recognising diversity as a strength, and delivering governance that prioritizes equity, justice, and prosperity.

“The League of National Democrats is more than a political movement- it is a promise to Nigerians. It is a commitment to rebuild our democracy and deliver the leadership this nation deserves”, Dr. Ardo declared.
With the LND, Nigeria could be on the verge of a transformative era, where patriotism and merit guide governance, and every citizen is empowered to contribute to the nation’s growth.
